My mother, Susan Voss, is a scientist and an artist. She has painted all her life, but after presenting her PhD dissertation which included electron microscope photography of the insect reproductive system, she began to experiment with new styles. The beauty of the scientific, "micro-world", inspired a new sense of color and shapes.
After Hurricane Katrina, Susan began to paint many satellite image-inspired hurricanes. (The "macro-world" mirrors the "micro-world": If you squint, don't they look like images under a microscope?) One of her Hurricane Katrina paintings (above) has been featured in The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. Also, Discovery Earth's Larry O'Hanlon interviewed her about science and art.
She, my father, and I
also share a passion for animals, especially dogs and cats, who have evolved alongside us bipedal apes. We have sold several paintings on Ebay to
contribute to organizations that help pets recover, find their
families, or find new homes after natural disasters. (See more paintings at the bottom of this page.)

Susan
Voss holds a Master's in Biology from Rivier College, as well as a PhD
in Entomology from the University of Georgia. She works as a researcher
in the Department of Experimental Pathology of Emory University.
