essayist, science writer, bilingual broadcast meteorologist

I was born on March 16, 1971 in Durham, NC, although I lived most of my life in Atlanta, GA. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Agnes Scott College in Spanish Literature with a minor in English, and a Bachelor of Science in Geosciences and Meteorology from Mississippi State University. I hold the AMS Seal for radio and television and I am a member of the National Association of Science Writers.

In the early 90s, I moved to Spain, where I lived for seven years. There, I wrote a column for women called "The Venusian Chronicles" for a Spanish national newspaper. After returning to the U.S., I worked for 10 years as a bilingual (English/Spanish) broadcast meteorologist at The Weather Channel Latin America and AccuWeather.

I am now a research associate in the department of anthropology at The Pennsylvania State University where my husband, Dr. Mark Shriver, is an associate professor of genetics. We are collaborating on a science education video project, as well as a popular science book about "race," genetic ancestry, and society. We hope this work will send a positive message about our species' common origin and our deep connectedness to each other and all life.

I am also a regular columnist for Free Inquiry magazine, and I have written essays for The Humanist and The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, and New Scientist.

Some of my essays/articles:

"Hurricane Ergo Sum," The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society

"I Want (Not) to Believe," Free Inquiry

"On the Boxing of Broadcast Meteorologists,"
The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society
