essayist, science writer, bilingual broadcast meteorologist

I was born on March 16, 1971 in Durham, NC, although I lived most of my life in Atlanta, GA, and spent seven years in Valencia, Spain. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Agnes Scott College in Spanish Literature with a minor in English, and a Bachelor of Science in Geosciences and Meteorology from Mississippi State University. I hold the AMS Seal for radio and television and I am a member of the National Association of Science Writers. I worked for 10 years as a bilingual (English/Spanish) broadcast meteorologist at The Weather Channel Latin America and AccuWeather.

I am now a science and research writer at Penn State in the College of Science. I also have collaborated on several projects, including a video education project, with my husband, Dr. Mark Shriver, associate professor of genetics in the Department of Anthropology at Penn State.

I am a regular columnist for Free Inquiry magazine. I also have written essays for The Humanist, The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, and New Scientist.

One of my main goals as a science writer is to help send a positive message to the public about our species' common origin and our deep connectedness to each other and all life.

Some of my essays/articles:

"Set Your DNA Free," New Scientist

"I Want (Not) to Believe," Free Inquiry

"On the Boxing of Broadcast Meteorologists,"
The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society
